Sometimes It's Better to Just Let it Happen

This is a studio painting from memory, imagination and a sketch.
The Valley Below is a compilation of different parts of the Sheyenne River Valley and the coteau region of Southeast North Dakota, an area of the country etched in my memory. It doesn't matter if this is a realistic depiction, because it evokes emotions that feel right to me, and much like when I was a child drawing on the blackboard in the back of my mom's hair salon, it brings back fond memories.
I never felt the need to be too exact in my interpretation of the sketch. The drawing was simply a way of depicting what I saw in my mind's eye. While doing this sketch, I was imagining how I might paint this subject. And while painting, it changed and morphed often because of "happy accidents" or little discoveries along the way. In other words, I just let it happen.
